It’s exciting times in the aesthetics industry because now there is no need to undergo expensive and high-risk surgery to achieve a natural looking improvement of sagging, tired skin, fine lines and drooping on both the face and body.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive approach to skin tightening and rejuvenation that is currently in high demand around the world, and is achieved without surgery, bleeding or scarring. HIFU technology is taking over from laser, radio frequency, IPL, needling and other ‘face lift’ skin rejuvenation procedures. Why? Because it is the next generation in advanced facial rejuvenation offering deeper penetration, visible longer lasting results, and most importantly, no damage to the skin surface.

HIFU works with ultrasound which is an oscillating sound pressure wave, created by a very rapid vibration, with a frequency greater than the upper limit of the human hearing range. Ultrasound is used in many different fields including surgery and medical applications, and has now been honed to target skin lifting. When focused, the high intensity vibrational energy of the Ultrasonic wave is turned to thermal energy.

The HIFU beams through the surface of the skin to deliver precise and fractional ultrasound energy to the deeper dermis, subcutaneous tissue and muscle layers. This deeper layer is responsible for muscular activity in the face, and whilst the energy stimulates both muscle firming, new collagen is also produced with no disruption to the outer skin surface (no scarring).

HIFU can improve anywhere that your face or body are showing the signs of ageing including eyebrows, frown lines, jowls, smile lines, nasolabial folds, neck, arms, flanks, things, tummy, bottom and décolletage.

And, better still, the results continue to improve over the next 6 months!

Depending on the treatment, we will target the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system) at the same depth as a surgical face-lift. This deeper layer is responsible for muscular activity in the face, and is where tightening and regeneration take place to create lasting visible lifting. We also target the connective tissue stimulating new collagen and elastin synthesis, improving skin texture, reducing wrinkles and firming.

The processes of regeneration take place progressively and gradually, from the deeper tissue towards the skin surface, working naturally to both uplift and rejuvenate the skin.

The result is lasting significant visible skin firming and tightening after just one treatment, with clients excited to look 5 to 10 years younger.

The process of skin regeneration and rejuvenation takes time as the new extracellular collagen matrix is formed, strengthened and re-modelled. Best visible results are usually seen at 8 to 12 weeks, however this effect will continue and can be seen firming and lifting the skin for up to 6 months after the treatment.

On this basis a repeat HIFU Face Uplift treatment is recommended at approximately every 3 to 6 months depending on the age of the client and the condition of the skin.

HIFU results are permanent and will continue improving gradually for up to six months following the treatment. You will not be frozen in time. After six months, as with any age defying treatment, your skin will naturally continue to age but HIFU can give you fresher, younger looking skin for approximately 12 to 24 months after your treatment.  (Radio Frequency) RF, red light LED and other treatments are also very effective at protecting and maintaining your HIFU results. These can be done as soon as few weeks after the HIFU treatment.

Ultrasound has been used safely in the medical field for over 50 years. HIFU is one of the few treatments safe for all skin types, as it uses ultrasound and bypasses the upper layers of skin where the pigment cells are located. There are some people who may not be suitable including those with the following:

  • open lesions or wounds
  • cystic acne
  • keloid scarring
  • mechanical or dermal implants
  • implanted electrical devices (pacemakers)
  • metal implants in the face or treated area
  • pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • warfarin or other blood thinners
  • anti-epileptic medication
  • anti-depressants/anti-psychotic medication

HIFU may cause a slight redness to the skin, but this usually disappears within a matter of hours after the treatment. Face can feel like it has had a workout for several weeks afterwards. Makeup application after the treatment can be made to mask any mild redness that may have occurred. Some people may also suffer from a slight swelling, tenderness, numbness or tingling sensation. These symptoms are usually mild and only last temporarily.

HIFU may cause some discomfort. Comfort levels can vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the energy is being delivered.

During the treatment delivery, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, indicating that the collagen-building process has been initiated.

Anti-inflammatory pain killers (eg. ibuprofen (Nurofen) are not recommended for the HIFU treatment but can be used post-treatment to reduce swelling and ease pain.

After Your Treatment

You can return to your normal activities immediately after your procedure without any post-treatment restrictions or requirements. Your skin might appear flushed at first, but the redness should disappear within a few hours.

Other, less common post-procedural effects may include temporary bruising or numbness on small areas of skin. As with any medical procedure, there is the possibility for other rare effects.

  • Avoid hot water when washing the face until any redness has subsided.
  • Makeup (preferably mineral based) may be applied immediately post treatment.
  • Soothing, non-irritating creams or moisturisers may be used.
  • Avoid sun exposure immediately after the treatment.
  • Avoid exfoliation or any aggressive skin treatment, for at least one week or until all sensitivity in the treatment area has subsided.
  • Soothing facial treatments (such as Collagen, Oxygen Therapy and LED light therapy) to boost the neoelastogenesis and neocollagenesis processes are recommended and can start once all sensitivity in the treatment area has subsided (usually 1-2 weeks post HIFU treatment.)

HIFU body sculpting is a non-invasive treatment for removing stubborn body fat, skin toning and tightening. HIFU Body treatments are the latest in non-invasive technology to target specific areas of fat in the quickest way possible. Only one treatment is required to achieve the results and there is no downtime. HIFU offers a real natural alternative to lipsuction or surgery.

In a Body Sculpting treatment the ultrasound energy is focused into the subcutaneous fat layer at the right temperature, without damaging or disrupting the epidermal tissue of the skin.

Body areas treatable with our HIFU technology include the: abdomen, arms, bra fat, flanks, buttocks, décolletage inner thighs and outer thighs. HIFU is not used for weight loss and the best results are achieved when your body weight is stable, and you have a healthy lifestyle.

HIFU Body treatment destroys fat cells in the area treated being treated thus reducing the visible size of the targeted area. Some results may be seen in around 1-2 weeks after treatment, however, significant results are usually seen after 4 to 6 weeks as the ablated contents of the fat cells are gradually flushed away via the normal blood circulation and lymphatic systems. Further the process of collagen and elastin synthesis, improving skin elasticity, tone and texture, continues for up to 3 months. On this basis it is recommended that follow up treatments are performed at least 3 months after the initial treatment.

As with the face, HIFU results are permanent and will continue to improve gradually for up to 3 months following the treatment. As with any age defying treatment your skin will naturally continue to age but HIFU can give you fresher, younger looking skin for approximately 12 to 24 months after your treatment As with the facial treatments, RF can be used in between to maintain HIFU results. RF treatment can be done as soon as few weeks after the HIFU treatment.

Please note the contraindications, side effects, expected discomfort levels and after care noted above.
